The ancient Babylonians were the first to recognize the celestial sphere with boundaries defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The celestial sphere is visualized as a shphere larger than the Earth, upon which constellations are projected as viewed from the Earth's surfacec. There are 88 official modern constellations, which include the 48 classical Greek constellations recorded by Ptolemy. The familiar signs of the zodiac make up 12 of the 88 constellations.
